Our story

A small workshop, started on a whim.

Haven & Hearth started in April 2022 in a one-car garage on Reedley Street in Moorpark. I had no business plan, just a stack of barn beams a neighbor in Santa Paula was about to throw out, and the vague feeling that I could probably turn them into something useful.

The workshop on a fall morning.

Why reclaimed wood

Old wood behaves differently than new lumber. It's drier, denser, and already moved through every season it's going to move through. That means the boards we cut from a 1920s barn beam stay flat and don't check the way fresh oak sometimes does. It also means each plank has a story — nail holes, weather marks, the dark line of an old hinge.

We source within roughly 150 miles of Moorpark: Ventura County barns, Ojai ranches, and the occasional fallen tree from a property friend. Nothing is cut for us. If we can't reclaim it, we don't make it.

Sanding a small piece in the workshop.

A one-woman shop

I am, very literally, the entire company. I do the sourcing, the denailing (the worst part), the milling, the joinery, the finishing, and the packing. My partner Eli helps me load the truck on delivery days. Our retired cat Biscuit supervises from the windowsill, mostly unimpressed.

Because it's just me, batches are small and lead times are honest. If I tell you something will ship in three weeks, it ships in three weeks. If something is going to be late, you'll hear it from me before you have to ask.

What's next

In 2025 we're starting a small custom-order book for wedding gifts and oddly-sized shelves — the kind of pieces that don't fit a catalog. If you have something in mind, the custom orders page is the place to start.
